Volunteer Project

The Forum has a wide range of volunteering opportunities available including training support at the Valley Online Centre, helping with the Festival and other events, working on the Gleadless Valley News and much more.  There is always help required and there are benefits such as gaining work experience and meeting new people.  Its also a great opportunity to be involved in the community.

Cheryl AlveyCheryl Alvey first came into the Valley Online Centre to look for work in GV Job Club.  She has increased her skills and confidence greatly while job hunting and now is volunteering every day at the centre.

Cheryl says: “Its such a great atmosphere and I enjoy helping all the people that come into the centre to job hunt and learn new skills. I just wanted to give something back to the community for all the help I have received and all with a smile and for free”.  Cheryl understands how people are feeling as she has faced many obstacles and challenges in her life, similar to lots of the people who use the centre.  Cheryl is still looking for part time work while she is volunteering.  She still wants to continue volunteering and will fit it around her part time job.

You'll usually find Cheryl in the Valley Online Centre if you'd like to speak to her, or contact her on 0114 239 4888 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

brian_fisher_webBryun Fisher has been with the Forum for some time now and is lending his warmth and friendliness to the Older People’s Services project, not to mention his driving skills which mean that the swimbus and transport for the weekly chairobics group are secure and in good hands.

JimJim Bowen is our Volunteer IT Consultant.  This means that if anything goes wrong with our PCs or we need some help implementing a new system, Jim'll fix it!

“I am 45 years old living in Gleadless Valley. I’m an IT Project Manager and Infrastructure Engineer. I enjoy working with Gleadless Valley Community Forum, keeping the IT system running and creating a safe and secure IT facility for the residents.”

Perri_WeldonThis is Perri Weldon who says:

"I am 17 years old and work as a Volunteer Playworker/Youth Worker for the Children and Young People’s (C&YP) Project since leaving school in the Summer of 2011.  I am currently attending 6th Form college and plan to go to university in the near future.

I attended youth club sessions for 3 years with my friends and became a peer mentor.  I was involved in the Youth Empowerment Project and Check It Out Group before deciding that I would like to give back something to the community.  I currently work on Tuesday evenings for the C&YP Project Inters Club and help out with Junior Clubs and Playschemes."

Many thanks to all of our volunteers.
